The first fire department in Vernon began in 1825 with the first apparatus, purchased for $150. The Village of Vernon was chartered in 1827, and in that year the fire company was first organized, the engine was repaired and hose purchased. In 1833, the fire company was newly incorporated with 17 members, and in 1840, they built a new engine house. Vernon Fire Company was organized Jan 2 1871 and Hose Company on Sept 2, 1872.
In 1872, they purchased another engine to supplement the 1825 equipment. In 1946, the current organization – the Volunteer Fire company of Vernon, Inc. was incorporated.
